superhappy:

While cleaning I found this sketchbook full of great anime drawings from 1995

In conclusion, Josh has always been an amazing artist.

I was missed.

new rule, ask me to read homestuck and i will ignore/block/whatever you

homestuck is probably fine, but you, specifically you, are super annoying

i would trade all of the jehovahs witnesses in the world for you

Jesus Christ, yes.  I respect Adam Andrew Hussie - motherfucker works hard on his strips and deserves all the success he gets.  If you read his comic and love it, awesome!  I hope you continue to do so.  AND most Homestuck fans I’ve met are pretty nice folks who just really enjoy a comic and are cool about it.

But the evangelists can go to fucking hell and rot with the pushy bronies who can’t accept you don’t adore their cartoon about talking ponies.

(I will say, in defense of Homestuck fans, most of the ones I’ve met fall into the “it’s just a cartoon I like and that’s cool” category.  I can’t say that about most bronies I’ve had to interact with - but they’re still more sane than the ball-jointed-doll people on the whole)

Edit: Apparently, I screwed up Andrew’s first name.  Sorry - not a reader of his work.  I only ever even heard of it from all the people in horns at conventions.

Not a question, but I can't find a reply button (tumblr's not so good at conversations). Standard high school level art instruction hammers home the idea that you should never use black for shading or anything that isn't REALLY black. Use complementary colors, dark grays and blues, etc.

That’s a little different, though.  The person who replied to me was told they were never to have black or white in their tubes of paint.  I honest seldom use either, although I do use black for shading some (because I’m going for a more comic style).  Mostly I use them in mixing for new colors.  If the person had been told, “Hey, y’know there are better tools than black and white,” that would have been one thing.  I kinda wish they had.  At least the person would have learned.  The whole, “YOU MUST NEVER” mentality turns most people off of art.

But you need them,  Most of watercolor painting is mixing paints to get new colors.  They aren’t the most important paints I use - in fact I almost never have to break them out - but not having them is limiting as shit.
Sounds like this “artist” is one of those people who feels if you don’t do something the exact way she does it, you’re doing it wrong.  It’s a stunningly pervasive mentality in art from painting to drawing webcomics (especially the latter - there was a reason I kept mostly to myself when I started drawing S*P).  And, trust me, I’ve been hearing how I’m “doing it wrong” from both camps for over a decade now.  But the truth is there’s no one correct way to make art.
Find the ingredients you like, the method you’re comfortable with, and jump in.  Over time you’ll learn new ways - you’ll refine, you’ll correct things you don’t like, you’ll advance.  It’s part of a wonderful process.  You’ll even see things other people are doing and experiment to understand their process.  Some things you’ll make won’t be successful and will fall flat.  Some things will catch on.  It’s yours to enjoy and share as you see fit.
But anyone who tells you that you CAN’T make art your way, unless you’re plagiarizing someone, can fuck themselves right off.
…. black and white. Christ on a fucking stick.
